Newcastle is getting ready to celebrate Christmas in style with new attractions and entertainment involving local retailers and traders to make the city a destination of choice for festive shoppers and visitors alike.

For the first time, the Christmas Market is being organised by the Mellors Group and follows the granting of planning permission by Newcastle City Council. They will also be working alongside NE1, the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), with the market not only based at Grey’s Monument but also extended to Blackett Street and Northumberland Street, with the yuletide takeover starting on Saturday 16 November 2019. Shopping stalls and attractions will then be open until Tuesday 24 December 2019, while the street food and drink offering will remain open until New Year’s Eve (Tuesday 31 December 2019).

There will be even more festive fun in store for visitors to the city centre with exciting new attractions such as a thrilling 30m toboggan slide where riders can whizz down Blackett Street in tubes. A beautiful, traditional carousel will also be on Blackett Street to offer some family fun and a novel Helter Skelter bar will be at the Christmas Market, allowing parents to relax with a mulled wine, spiced cider or hot chocolate and marshmallows, whilst children experience the delights of the rides and attractions.

Christmas shoppers and visitors to the city will also be able to take a break and soak up the atmosphere in the brand new, cosy ski lodge themed bar, Après Ski which will be serving drinks throughout the festive period.

There is a whole host of entertainment booked over the Christmas period too, ranging from Christmas songs in the day time, to electric violins, musicians and artists in the evenings and weekends.

Edward Mellors, a director of the Mellors Group said: “We are looking forward to getting Christmas underway in Newcastle. With the new attractions and an even bigger market, it will have all the trimmings to make Christmas in Newcastle the best ever.”

Cllr Ged Bell, Cabinet member for Employment and Culture, Newcastle City Council said: “I very much look forward to welcoming these markets to the city and am confident they will position Newcastle as a major festive destination, one to rival other national and European cities.

“We are a vibrant and modern city which deserves a Christmas experience and a successful market. The additional visitors this will bring will also have a positive impact across the city, particularly for existing hotels, shops, bars and restaurants.”

Stephen Patterson, Director of Communications for NE1 said “Christmas is a special time of year for Newcastle and the city really comes alive over the festive season. From the Fenwick Christmas window to Skating at Life, the Grainger Market and the Christmas Lights Switch on, there’s always lots going on in the city.

“As the North East’s number one retail and leisure destination, it is right that the city delivers a festive offer that we can all be proud of. This year’s Christmas Markets will be a huge part of this. It signals a step change in the city’s approach to Christmas, something we are excited to build upon in the years to come.”
